All other programs, surfing, email, etc will be in the Mac OS. Only using Windows 7 since TradeStation is not avaiable on Mac OS or I would never, ever use Windows again. Since I am not very tech wise I am looking for the smartest route.

They recommend 4GiB because there's a significant amount of storage overhead required to store a guest on the host. I'm not sure how Parallels works but VMWare Workstation / VMWare Fusion write the entirety of the virtual memory to the hard disk when the guest is suspended and this same file is locked when the guest is running. Since most operating systems use non-committed memory to cache disk data this also gets written to the disk. Snapshots, etc. Also maintain disk memory. Thus, the implications of additional memory to a guest are more than simply denying the host the use of that same memory, it can cause disk IO to increase and this can have a negative impact on the guest performance. I'm not saying that my experience is indicative of everyone else's, but I've never had a bug problem with Virtual Box.

I've got parallels running on an mid-2010 i3 imac 12GB ram and an late-2014 i7 mbp with 16gb ram and both run fine. Don't buy it configured with the 32gb ram, it'll be much cheaper to buy the extra ram from crucial and put it in yourself. VMware Fusion 2 seems to use more memory that it's earlier version. So much so, that using full screen makes it not worth using (just too slow with only 1GB of RAM). However, it seems faster when not using the full screen.

You can also optionally add Windows programs to Launchpad. Thankfully, Fusion does so intelligently: It doesn't add every single Windows program to that app interface. I had no trouble at all running a normal suite of Windows office applications (including Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, and Acrobat). The applications loaded quickly; everything worked as I expected it to. I also tested a number of games, and there the results were decent. Most older games ran just fine, and more recent games ran reasonably well, but graphically-intensive new games ran either very poorly or not at all.
